Ethnography and Cultural Landscape

In the Seminar on Using Non-Standard Sources in Research, we were encouraged to research a culture group within our community, but different from our own, using ethnography, cultural landscape, the image, and the artifact. Students in the class used culture groups like the MTSU Band of Blue, Muslim women on campus, Somalian women on campus, and the Buddhists of Murfreesboro. I decided to approach the Vietnamese of West Nashville, since it would be an interesting way to also research ethnocultural change in the community where I grew up.

My favorite non-standard source, although I enjoyed working with all four, was the cultural landscape. We were required to write a short paper for each non-standard source that we used. Read my cultural landscape report about West Nashville.

At the end of the course, we prepared a professional-quality presentation for our classmates, professors, and cultural liaisons. We also all appeared on the campus radio show, On the Record with Gina Logue. See my presentation on Ethnocultural Change in West Nashville and listen to me and my classmates discuss our various culture groups with Logue for On the Record. I discuss my project at 08:42.
